Working with children who have been Abused

Part 1

Aims:

This course explores the issues for children who have been abused and helps you develop knowledge, skills and abilities, in working in this area. It recognises the importance of respect for diversity and sensitivity to issues of race, culture, gender, sexuality and disability. These issues will be addressed in this course.

Objectives:

  • Developed an understanding of the different types of abuse children and young people can experience.
  • Developed an understanding of the impact of abuse and the resulting behaviours e.g. verbal abuse, sexualised behaviour, depression, post traumatic stress disorder etc.
  • To be able to recognise signs, symptoms and behaviours that may indicate that abuse has occurred and how to respond.
  • To have begun the process of developing the skills and abilities to work with abused children.
  • To recognise the intensity of feeling that abuse can generate (for the family, child or young person) and begin to develop skills and abilities to manage this.
  • To have knowledge and understanding of information sharing, safeguarding procedures and referral processes; and knowledge of how to appropriately respond to a disclosure.
  • To develop an understanding of the importance of supervision and support in this work.
  • To develop appropriate alertness to the risks of harm to vulnerable children in the wider environment.

All participants will receive a course booklet containing all the key ideas and support material covered on the course.
Course length

1 Day, 10am - 230pm.

Suitability

This course is suitable for Residential Care Staff, Care Support Staff, Foster Carers, Social Workers, Teachers and Learning Support Assistance.

Part 2

Aims:

It recognises the importance of respect for diversity and sensitivity to issues of race, culture, gender, sexuality and disability. These issues will be addressed in this course.

Objectives:

  • To enable agencies to establish effective partnerships with caregivers
  • Providing carers with information they can use
  • Arranging for practical parenting support that directly relates to the needs of these children
  • Creating a safe place for your child
  • Understanding the impact of abuse
  • How we can help children who have been abused
  • The question of therapy and building resilience
