Skills to Foster

Aims:
• To provide participants with information about the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to begin a career in fostering.
• To help participants to reflect on their values and attitudes in relation to the task of caring for children and young people who are separated from their families.
• To provide opportunities for participants to think about how fostering will impact on their families and way of life and help them to decide whether or not fostering is right for them.
Objectives:

  • to provide opportunities to develop skills to become foster carers
  • to prepare applicants with information and/or material for use in the home study assessment
  • to provide opportunities to discuss fostering with others in the same position

  • Identity and life chances
  • Working with others
  • Understanding children in foster care
  • Safer caring
  • Transitions

Training Method
Tutor input, Question and answer session, Group work Case Studies, Practice of skills
Course Materials
All participants will receive a course booklet containing all the key ideas and support material covered on the course.
Course length

2 or 3 Days or (6 Sessions [2 Hours long]), 10am - 430pm.

This course is suitable for Care Support Staff, Prospective Foster Carers and Social Workers
